Rocketguy, I was thinking about asking you this yesterday, but wanted to play with your 0.9 release first.

Do you have any interest in this idea (feel free to say no):

Here is an idea:

There is some interest in the SDA community and the Func_Msgboard single player communities for a coop server running custom maps.

You already have the ideal codebase +/- a few things:

You can do map voting (very important)


I can easily build installers for map sets and I can QBSP in extra coop spawn points into maps.

An example installer (it is newbie proof as well and has incredible compression):

If you are interested, and again feel free to say no, it would be cool to run your mod with the hook off and unvotable and the runes off running custom maps. I already know this would be a hit.

I mention the runes + hook because those communities are hardcore vanilla Quake single player.

I could do my part:

1. Identify extra coop spawn points and QBSP them into the maps.
2. Build user side installers.

... in 24 hours easy.

Do you have any interest in this? If you do and for some reason this didn't work out, I don't see what you'd have to lose. I'd ensure that a vast quantity of players in several communities were aware of it as well.

And just as an FYI, I had always intended for your server to be listed in the server browser at QuakeOne.com. I had basically been gone from Quake for several months until about March 5th and there was a mountain of work to do on the site even after it launched and this got lost in the cracks.

This would allow players on the server to go to a special map and look at screenshots of the various maps available and walk into a teleporter of their choosing to select the map. It might take a little QuakeC on your end to make it work ideally, but such a map could easily be tossed into the client-side download.

Tell me what you want from me and I can get it done lightning quick.

I'll do my part as rapid as humanly possible.

The first challenge is identifying single player maps.

One list of maps --- and I have played all of these -- that are standalones (no custom monsters, models) are these ...

Any maps you indicate that you want me to do this for, I will do the same.

I will have this completed in 18 hours or less.

The Gateway map, I can complete by next Friday. It's optional, but would be a cool crowning touch to the server.

i've seen the terra maps on FVF, they're pretty cool. i'm gonna go check how they work with rq coop.

Added: blitz1000.bsp since I had to kill off those 2 maps.


Also as a contingency plan, it might be necessary to add the spawn points into the QuakeC. I don't think so, but there could be a client-server map mismatch potential if I QBSP. Probably not, xCTF maps had to be re-QBSP'd. But it is a possibility.

If so, I can organize all the spawn points in whatever QuakeC format needed. This is if it becomes necessary.

i already did this for chthon and shub rune.

also there is a problem in the map terra2, deathmatch removes gold and silver key but not their doors. i need you to qbsp to these origins

Flash light when axe is selected?
Maybe a radar style command to help locate other players?

Possible command names? Radar? Radio?

jjspq3 (one way lift?), lunar (exit), lunar2 (exit), wolfddm3 (exit), a3 (info_player_start), dilcoa (trigger missing or something) all have minor issues.

Give 45 rockets on getting explosives capability. Maybe make bombs affect other players to make things interesting. Singularity needs to use cells faster (5 times as fast?).

Medic/Engineer need to repair/heal faster. Maybe give medic a color flash when healing. "Yes" should be available to affirm a vote-exit. Map names that exceed 8 characters issue, maybe shorten map names. Vortex warning didn't seem to be noticeable, maybe a warning sound from the vortex itself for the 5 seconds prior to it activating.

Did I forget anything from notes?

Other observations: upon the exit of a map by normal means (i.e. the Exit Teleporter), it should print to the console how long it took to finish the map (map timer), plus number of monsters killed vs. number of monsters possible to kill for the group as a whole, since the scoreboard doesn't show that.

Example:

Time required: 31:28 seconds
Monsters: 36 of 41 killed

Otherwise you don't get feedback if you killed all the monsters. If this is possible, of course.

Rocketguy, does this seem like something that might solve the problem. It's a suggestion from scar3crow.

Flashlight research and options ...

1. Engine side patch. Cons: Flashlight will only work in DarkPlaces due to similar code in cl_main.c according to FrikaC and LordHavoc.

However, I think it wouldn't be too much trouble to get cl_main.c tweaked a bit in official releases by JoeQuake (GL, Win, Linux) and QRack (GL).

2. Don't patch the server-side engine and require null.spr ( There is a null.spr in this download) which is a blank sprite model.

null.spr would go into c:\quake\id1\progs

3. Use the bubble sprite, although I think of the available sprites ... well, all of them would look a look flakey, although maybe this isn't true.

4. Option #4, revert to the prior flashlight that illuminated the player.

5. Option #5, change flashlight to flare capability where you throw a grenade or something that stays illuminated and then burns out in 30 seconds or something.

(98% of visitors to QuakeOne.com are Windows users and I think that is pretty much representative of the Quake population. You would expect the Linux users to be able to manually put null.spr in the appropriate folder since they have to be very computer/Quake literate to use Linux, heh).

Option #5, is cool too

You are the guy that has put a ton of effort into the code. You make the call. I kinda of like Option #1 myself, a completely realistic flashlight without requiring a special model but needing updated engines to get the full effect in the mod. The flashlight is a great feature, but is hardly required to play and I can imagine that 80% of the maps don't have much of a need for it.

Option #2 is also very good.

I've taken ALL map screenshots and processed them for the gateway teleporters and already converted them into the proper Quake paletted map textures.

I need to build labels for them and I am doing so, the main issue with be to replicate the teleporters 70 times or whatever and align the textures, nevertheless the map will be done soon, just not likely today due to real life.

It should be done by Monday or Tuesday, I'm thinking. Or maybe even sooner if I can free up some quality time on Saturday.

Question: Did you add a "radar" rune like feature so you can press a key and get an audio so you can find your team members? I think you did, did that get tested yet? The one time I couldn't get it to work. Was the command called "radio"?

yes i did, i've tested it to work fine a while ago.. the command is called "radar".
