Post subject:  [NEW VOTE SYSTEM / COMMANDS]

How To Vote

You can only vote on one option at a time. When you vote for an option, you'll be prompted to type yes or no in the Quake console. Voting yes adds 1 point to the vote tally system while voting no removes a 1/2 a point. You can retract your vote by simply typing its opposite. For example, if you already voted yes, type no to retract and vice-versa. If you do retract your vote, you can vote again either in favor or against by typing yes or no. Typing the same vote option as the one in progress will automatically trigger a yes vote. To always vote no, use the never command--you can toggle this feature by typing it again when a vote is not in progress.

To see the vote, the list of people who voted, and how, use the command show-votes.

That's it! It's a fairly simply system and I'm still working out the kinks. If you think this voting system looks familiar, you're right, votes look the same way as they do in CRMod.

Voting Options

I'll be adding more commands over time, but here is what I have so far, including the old ones, which are listed first.

Don't worry if you forget these options. Typing help-vote in the console will list all the different voting options and what they do. To see what options have already been enabled/disabled, type help-options.

vote-exit

Vote to exit the level letting the mod decide which level to pick next.

<map name>

Enter the map name of the level you want to vote for. For example, to vote for the map e3m5 (aka Wind Tunnels), type e3m5 in the console. If you don't the map you want, but you know the full name (ex: Wind Tunnels), type help-levels.

vote-team

Vote to enable/disable team mode.

vote-hook

Vote to enable free hook, or disable hook type.

vote-lithium

Enable Lithium style hook. When Lithium hook is enabled, you have to find a small spiky little ball (aka vore ball) in order to use the hook.

vote-free

Enable free hook.

vote-practice

Enable CRMod style practice mode. You have unlimited ammo and all of the weapons have been removed. Alternate weapons will also be disabled.

vote-normal

Enter FFA mode.

vote-quad

Enable/disable quad damage.

vote-pent

Enable/disable pentagram of protection.

vote-ring

Enable/disable ring of shadows

vote-suit

Enable/disable environmental protection suit.

vote-armor

Enable/disable armor.

vote-rotate

Enable/disable rotating armor.

vote-runes

Enable/disable runes.

vote-alt-weapons

Enable/disable alternate weapons.

vote-shields

Enable/disable spawn shield protection.

vote-hook-damage

Enable/disable hook damage.

vote-mega

Enable/disable mega-health boxes.

vote-weapons-stay

Enable/disable weapons to remain on level after pick up.

vote-match

Enable CRMod style match mode.

timeset

Change the match timelimit. Valid only in match mode.

faststart

Toggle length of time to start match (20 or 60 seconds). Valid only in match mode.

lock / unlock

Prevent / allow new players from joining the match. Valid only in match mode.

vote-armor-drop

Enable/disable armor dropping.

vote-backpacks

Enable/disable backpack dropping.

vote-powerup-drop

Enable/disable powerup dropping.

vote-rune-drop

Enable/disable dropping your own rune when you die.

vote-lg-discharge

Enable/disable lightning discharge damage to enemies.

vote-classic-mega

Enable/disable classic style mega-health.

vote-random-spawn

Enable/disable random spawn points.

vote-shoot-buttons

Enable/disable shootable buttons.

vote-powerup-hats *new*

Enable/disable quad and pent powerup hat.

vote-default *new*

Set all vote options to the server's default options.

More to come... your suggestions are welcome!

Where To Vote

You can try out the new voting system on quake.shmack.net.

Many thanks to PainKiller for helping test the new vote code.

How about "vote-default" which when approved will reset everything to their default values? Also a command that displays the current settings would be informative.

Currently, the server goes back to its default settings after the last player leaves (give or take 15 seconds). It would be very simple to add this command, but would it be too confusing for other players? It might also mean that I need yet another command to tell what the default settings are. Let me look into this.

I am going to inform the player when he first connects what has changed as well as include the information in show-settings. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I added two more commands vote-armor and vote-rotate which are explained in my original message. I also fixed a bug that was preventing votes from being counted during the game queue.

Got around to adding help-vote, which describes all the vote commands.

"vote-alts" is not recognized although it's included in vote-help (aka help-vote).

I didn't quite finish the development of vote-alts or vote-runes when I added the help command, but they're done now.

Thanks Toyo,

I just witnessed a game played on a small map w/out alternate weapons. It was much less hectic and "playability" was increased.

I don't think players are given enough time to vote. And players almost always seem to pick a random map than their favorite which makes me believe they aren't aware of the option to vote for individual maps. I don't know what can be done to increase awareness though.

The game was more playable without Alts? imagine that!!! pffffft.. :)

Ha..

Can't it be posted somewhere in the game when you enter? Please don't do what Wido did with those advertisements.. They are as bad as popups.. can't get them to shut up.. :(

I'm afraid people rarely read the intro screen.

Since "vote-exit" is familiar to many, how about when a player votes to exit, he is immediately shown a simple message like, "type vote-help for additional vote options"?

Done. Try it. :)

Added vote-shields, which lets you enable/disable spawn shield protection. If the level changes though, you will spawn with shields to protect against slow entry into the level. Spawn shields are automatically disabled in practice mode.

I don't know if it's a bug or feature but here's the scenerio:

Player 1: vote-exit
Player 2: yes
Player 3: E1M8

This will result in map E1M8 being played. I think it's a bug since Players 1 and 2 voted for what they believed was a random map. If Player 3 is mischievous, he can pick an awful DM map.

I was kind of hoping that this would remain a feature for those looking to escape the random map vote to vote for a map they like. I wasn't sure if I updated the broadcast message that it would make sense, which is why it still says voting for a random map when one was selected. There is no guarantee that a random map is a good map, so in that respect it does make sense.

No comment on the Toyo-BOT?

I thought about adding that option but I can only imagine that it will do more harm than good. :(

Added vote-hook-damage. Disabling hook damage prevents players from hooking on to other players or inflicting damage.

How about a limit on establishing a vote per level ?

It just seems some people can't take no for an answer, so they will keep establishing vote options untill their vote is approved. Perhaps 2 or 3 votes per level ? I just think the text on the screen is a bit irratating.

Other day someone wanted to change the level to a random level, so they kept processing their vote through the end of the game.
