Post subject:  Grapple sucks :)

I miss when there was no grapple at all and you actually had to work to get to certain areas of the map. Navigating a map is a skill in itself and the grapple has sort or taken that away. It's harder to use runes to trap people or force someone into a 1v1 battle cause either player can easily bail. E1M3 the necropolis was one of my favorites cause you had to go into the water to get the RL but there was only really one way out through that long hallway which was always fun and chaotic. There would be countless examples like that. Actually years ago I remember there was no grapple but you would often 'find' one and keep it till you died, so it wasn't a permanent thing. That was probably the best compromise. I know it can be voted but it's just a thought and I wonder if anyone else agreed or had any thoughts on how the grapple changed the game.

The grapple is more of a factor in Rune Quake than the runes themselves. It is far too potent. Not only does it make every map less unique, it makes players rely on it in lieu of basic dodging, attacking and navigational skills. Just how reliant we've become on it is evidenced by the frustration that usually ensues when playing without one after a long interval.

I've advocated that it be curtailed since removing it will drive players away. One idea is to expose the player to double damage whenever it's activated. Another idea is for it to only inflict armor damage to the hooked victim.

I liked lithium hook (find the hook, you don't have it for "free"), it was my favorite.

But it seems that most players prefer free hook.

Grapple is what made me play online Quake in the first place.
