Can someone help me with this? I've tried renaming it conchars.png and placing it in the gfx/textures/wad folder. I've also tried renaming in charset.png and placing it in the same folder. If anyone can help me out, that would be excellent. thanks.

You need to add it to your autoexec.
For example we have "whatever.png". Put it in Joequake\textures\charsets and add loadcharset whatever to your autoexec.

First you have to create a "charsets" folder inside "textures" and now put the charset.png inside like this:
textures/charsets/charset.png

now you type at the console "loadcharset charset.png" (without the quotes) and bingo!
this way you can have charset1.png, charset2.png, charset3.png and etc...
